Modding Skyrim as a beginner is a monumental task. Managing Mod installers, scripts and prerequisites can become chaotic and push you off of modding completely. Worry not as I will make it as easy as possible for you to understand how to mod Skyrim Special Edition and Anniversary Edition in 2026.
The links for all the mods and prerequisites are provided below:
Prerequisites To Mod Skyrim
- A Legit copy of Skyrim
Skyrim mods will only run with a legitimate copy of Skyrim. Pirated versions are not supported.
- Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE)
A tool for running your mods, Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) is mandatory. Make sure you get the file same as your version. Easy way to check your version is to update the game and get the Special Edition if you have not purchased the Anniversary edition DLC.
- Mod Manager- MO2 or Vortex
A mod installer is a necessary tool which will install your mods and help order them correctly to ensure smooth running of the game. You can opt for either Vortex or MO2. I personally use MO2 as it’s slightly easier to use if you have loads of mods. Vortex on the other hand is a better choice for a beginner. Keep reading to see how to set up the mod managers.
- SkyUI Mod
While not mandatory, 9/10 mods you might use will require SkyUI as a priority. It also reworks the UI so well that you will never want to go back to playing Vanilla.
- Address Library for SKSE Plugins
Another file which is necessary for the majority of mods to function properly. You can either install it through a mod manager or do it manually. If it is your first time, I suggest doing it through the installer.
How to use Vortex Mod Manager For Skyrim Special Edition
First we go through vortex which is a better choice for newbie modders. After downloading and installing Vortex Mod Manager follow the steps below:
- Step 1- Setting Up Vortex

Right when you open Vortex click on ‘ Select a game to manage’ and search Skyrim Special Edition. Anniversary edition mods will also work with this profile.

Another thing you need to do it to login through the user icon, this will allow the Mod manager to take care of the downloads instead of you having to manually download the files and then installing them.
- Step 2- Fixing Startup Errors
How to fix Mods can’t be deployed error

Ignore the bunch of errors you will see. First we need to fix ‘ Mods can’t be deployed. Simply click on Fix and press next till you reach Hard Deployment. Click fix and you will be taken to a different menu. You need to simply create a folder in the same drive as where you installed the game.

In my case I have two drives, C: and D: and Skyrim Special Edition is installed in the D: Drive. Make a new folder and click on apply. If it works the border will become green and one error is fixed.
How to fix Loose files may not get loaded error
To fix the Loose files may not get loaded, simply click on Fix and it will be resolved.
How to fix Script Extender not installed
To fix this error, we simply need to install the Script Extender as mentioned at the top. To download SKSE simply click here and then download the Anniversary Edition Build even if you do not have the DLC.
SKSE needs to be manually installed. Copy the content of the folder and paste it where the game files are. By default they will be in C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition.
Once pasted, run the game through skse64_loader AND NOT THROUGH SKYRIM SE OR SKYRIM LAUNCHER. Running the game through the standard launcher will not load the mods. If the game opens fine, you have successfully installed Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) and are ready to mod Skyrim Special Edition.
How to use Mod Organizer 2 For Skyrim Special Edition
After downloading and installation you will come across setting up an instance. Choose a portable instance which will make a new MO2 instance for your mods. You can make multiple instances if you want to run different mods setups that may not work together.
Afterwards browse and select the folder where Skyrim Special Edition is installed followed by selecting the appropriate version (steam, GOG or Epic). Afterwards just click next till you reach ‘Link mod organizer with Nexus account. Click on Connect to Nexus and follow the steps on the pop up. Finish up the setup and you are ready to mod Skyrim Special Edition with Mod Organizer 2.

To run the game through Mod Organizer, select SKSE and press run.
What Mods To Use In Skyrim Special Edition
Depends on your requirements, but some of the important mods in my opinion are the graphic updates and bug fixes. Some of the famous mods that you will find in everyone using are as follows:
RaceMenu:

Racemenu gives you an insane amount of customization options for your characters. This lets you create characters that don’t look like someone drew eyes on mashed potatoes that were thrown on a wall.
Fores New Idles in Skyrim – FNIS

This mod allows you to use other mods which add new animations to the game.
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch- USSEP:

Even if you mod lighty, USSEP is one of the things that should be high on your priority list. It essentially fixes almost all of the bugs and glitches in the vanilla game and makes Skyrim a smoother experience.
SkyHUD

A mod to make your HUD minimalistic and gives you more control over every aspect of it.
